6-12 Month Old Infant Milestone Portraits

Good morning, gang! This post is informative because many parents ask, "What should my baby wear to their photo appointment with you, Sarah?" I have great news: all styling is provided by me. This means everything for the session is in my studio. I have many adorable props, such as bowls, buckets, baskets, flokati rugs, etc., all of which match my classic, timeless, dreamy, and rustic photography style. I adore all things vintage and antique; the heart of my newborn portraiture is timeless, so this styling feeds into my sessions for sitters, who are 6 months old, and 12-month sessions, which are for little ones turning the big O-N-E-.

My favorite prop vendor for baby attire is George & Annie, located in Australia. She is my favorite person to purchase outfits from and I love updating my prop stash with her gorgeous items!

The best baby sessions feature outfits in which there are zero distracting patterns or logos. By providing a client closet to you, this not only makes the session preparation easier for you but ensures you have precious images of your little one! Simply come to my Houston Baby Portrait Studio, and leave all the setup and styling to me. In fact, I recently shared my go-to floor prop vendor, who is based in Poland. I often incorporate her pieces into my styling.

Her hand-crafted outfits are adorable. See a Sample Gallery of Outfits in Use so you can see how perfectly they showcase a little baby boy (or even a girl!).

The reason I love this vendor so much is that all of the outfits are stylish yet simple. This lends the perfect vintage flair that I adore. Moreover, the rustic, wooden buttons are completely adorable and timeless. They add fun details to the images but your baby is still the highlight of the image.

30 years from now, you want to remember your little one's absolutely breathtaking features. Their smile; their darling tootsie toes, the way their hands have a little roll of baby fat; those long lashes, puckered lips, tufts of hair, and belly!

Vintage & Natural Bed Prop | 'Mamamada' is Featured Vendor of June

Daniel's posed newborn session featuring a natural mini bed. Check out the featured prop vendor of the month!

Greetings, friends, and howdy to you! Thanks for visiting my blog! For today's post, I am sharing information about one of my favorite vendors I have recently discovered. You see, when designing gorgeous sessions for my newborn clients, I like to have props that are not only unique, but also natural, timeless, and inspired by all things vintage. I am also often asked where I find my props. This post is great if you're simply curious about where to find awesome props or maybe even looking for a little bit of newborn boy inspiration for an upcoming session.

These make for the best sessions and are truly a stunning keepsake of this precious time in your life. Welcoming a new baby is one of the best milestones; as a professional photographer, I can attest my little ones are the light of my life! This has strongly influenced my love for posing babies and creating works of art parents may cherish for generations.

This wooden floor prop is available in two colors within my studio: cream and brown. I often use the cream color for little girls and the natural brown for little lads! However, they're totally interchangeable and can be used for both genders. Daniel is an absolute squish so as soon as Mom relayed he is 9 pounds, I knew he would look fantastic in the tooshie up pose inside of a wooden newborn prop.

Mamamada is a favorite vendor of mine because her props are simply the best! She has pieces in the following categories:

  • woolen, wooden, metal, baskets, prop sets, wraps & layers, hair props, and even editing and retouching preset(s) for Lightroom!

Wow! Another reason Mamamada is one of my favorite newborn prop vendors is that each item is made with love and care. These are not mass produced items from a big box store, like Amazon or Target; these are individual pieces made by the owner. They are unique and special because they have their own character. They are also timeless and have a rustic look to them, which is perfect for my brand! I adore all of her props and have invested in more items, which I'll showcase later on. :-)

Another reason why I adore this vendor is because the customer service is perfection. Items are shipped quickly and a tracking number is provided. This is in line with the way I do business for my own photography studio so it makes me happy to see someone who delights in ensuring everything is perfect for the clients!

9 pounds and perfectly plump

Now that I've shown you the darling vintage-inspired bed, here are more highlights from Daniel's session. I hope you enjoy seeing all things natural, neutral, classic, and timeless. Providing dreamy and stunning newborn images is my favorite part of my job!

15 of the Cutest Lil Taters in Studio: Potato Sack Pose and Wrapping

15 Babies Who Slayed Their Potato Sack Newborn Pose

Versatile & Why It's the Best

Hi, friends! Today's blog post is a great read because it's all about my favorite type of newborn wrapping during my posed session: potato sack pose. This post also showcases 15 precious earth side cherubs who totally rocked this setup! Wrapping little ones makes for totally unique, special, and very laid back sessions.

Part of hiring a professional portrait photographer for your little one's first session is choosing someone who will keep baby's comfort in mind. Since the baby has spent nine months in a warm, tight place this style of wrapping is not only adorable but keeps baby very sleepy and calm. Essentially, creating an environment that mimics the womb baby does super well!

This is the best style of newborn wrapping because it's most versatile. For instance, during this pose you can do the following setups:

  • Sibling

  • Mom with Baby

  • Dad with Baby

  • Mom/Dad/Baby

  • Baby in floor prop

  • Baby on the flokati rug

  • Baby "sitting up" in potato sack pose

  • Baby laying down in potato sack pose

  • Macro images (up close detailed images of baby's features)

This allows you to create a gorgeous gallery for clients while seamlessly moving through tons of set ups! Moreover, potato sack pose is the best style of wrapping because it truly embodies baby as a bundle of joy. Parents marvel at how round they are - just like a little basketball!

I typically start my newborn sessions with this style, though have been known to sometimes end in a potato sack, too. Each baby is different!

Newborn Wrapping Basics

When wrapping a baby in potato sack pose, it is very important to ensure they are stable and properly supported. This style of wrapping can be achieved by attending a newborn workshop on safety + session flow. I would not recommend this pose to anybody who has not taken any hands on training as they baby is sitting up. The workshops will teach you how to achieve this look with baby's safety in mind.

Potato sack wrapping is also a great way to incorporate texture into the session. For example, there are several types of textiles on hand from cheesecloth to chunky knits. They may vary, depending on season, but are wonderful ways to elevate your newborn session through unique props. I adore using handcrafted hats and bonnets, too, to highlight baby's chubby cheeks! Few things are as precious as a brand new little one. Sometimes they even give us a smile, seen below, which is a total gem to capture. Such sweetness!

Simple Newborn Wrapping & Posing

Keep baby nice and snug by ensuring their joints are wrapping perfectly. This keeps baby very sleepy and content. They can be posed into adorable floors props, such as buckets, bowls, crates, etc. The options are endless, and my clients have full access to the vast array of awesome props I have on hand. In fact, I am constantly adding to my stash and am mildly (who I kidding, TOTALLY) addicted to having new items on hand for my most precious clients!
