Chic, Delicate, & Classic | Inspired by Four Elegant Color Ideas

4 Gorgeous Colors to Create Girly, Chic, and Dainty Newborn Photos | Inspired by a Love of Muted Tones

Newborn Styling 101: Be Timeless

When designing a custom newborn session, there are three aspects to my brand that are essential in creating some of the Best Houston Newborn Photography: Classic, Timeless, and Vintage-Inspired. My motto has always been, "Why be trendy, when you can be timeless?" This in mind, I offer a great styling questionnaire to all of my expecting parents. This is where we talk about your nursery colors, likes, dislikes, must have poses, and even things such as sentimental items from home so you may incorporate a personal item into your session if you wish.

This in mind, when Lily's mother, Talitha, shared her color preferences with me, she mentioned she loves nude colors. I found inspiration for their girly, chic, and feminine newborn session in the most interesting of ways: through an eyeshadow palette! I headed to my master bath and studied some of my favorite groupings.

Tan, Beige, Cream, and Mauve | Styling Houston Newborn Photos

These four colors, tan, beige, cream, and mauve, are absolutely breathtaking and stunning, making for an amazingly gorgeous newborn girl portrait session!

These four colors, listed above, make for an elegant color scheme for the most petite of clients: a precious newborn baby girl! When it comes to setting up for a session, everything is provided by me; all the dainty tiebacks, wraps, headbands, bowls, buckets, textiles, etc., it's all available in my client closet. The cream, for instance, looks spectacular against Lily's skin tone; her parents brought a pearl bracelet to add a sweet southern touch to the session, and I cannot stop swooning over her gallery! How lucky am I to photograph the most beautiful babies in all of Houston, Texas?

During my time with Lily, we focused on the blush pink and rosy tones, as well as mauve and even a vanilla cream! These colors are timeless, classic, and result in a fantastic gallery. During potato sack pose, for instance, I paired the fluffy cream flokati rug with an adorable rose headband to emphasize all things feminine and chic about a brand new little girl. From the moment of being earthside, Lily is super stylish!

In my Houston Baby Portrait Studio, you'll find (3) custom wood walls that make for stunning portraits! A dark wooden wall is a great option for my sessions because the texture is lovely with the vintage-inspired floor props I keep on hand. The cream, tan, and lace are all super girly while maintaining the vintage-inspired aspect of my newborn brand.

Finally, a cream distressed farmhouse bucket is a great way to encompass the nude color scheme for an elegant newborn girl photography session! This soft blush pink wrap is the perfect accent to little one's skintone; paired with a mauve pillow and rosy pink head piece accesorry, she is perfectly pink in all things nude!

Gorgeous Posed Newborn Styling through Vintage Inspired Floor Props

Vintage Meets Classic for Timeless Newborn Portraiture | Gorgeous Posed Sessions through buckets, bowls, baskets and other floor props.

Floor Prop Styling during a studio newborn session with Sarah Borchgrevink

Friends, hi! I'm excited you're visiting today! This blog post is a great overview on floor props, how to style them, and from which I pull inspiration. Many parents ask, "What's a floor prop?" If you're curious about this, I've got all the information you need!

If you've visited before, you probably know my name is Sarah and I adore all things newborn portraiture. I spend my days in studio wrapping precious babies, snuggling them, getting to know their parents, and truly delighting in capturing the custom art of posed baby photography. I'm located in Houston and it's my favorite place to be!

All of my newborn collections include at least three floor props during our time together. Sessions are around 2 hours long so we have plenty of time to feed baby, do lots of cozy, unique wrapping, implement naked bean bag posing, and ensure we utilize many classic floor props, which will be previewed below.

Before we get started, floor props are literally what they sound like: props that are placed on the floor, ha! Examples include:

  • Buckets
  • Pails
  • Bowls
  • Baskets
  • Trenches
  • Many more! Anything is possible in the world of baby photos, ha!

Floor props are also a wonderful way to add variety to your session because baby may be wrapped or added into many different types of props so that your session is full of stunning images! We want each image to stand alone and be gorgeous.

Classic Wooden Bowl & Trench

Props for Newborn Photography

My favorite floor props to use are typically of the wooden variety since they're both rustic and organic. After all, why be trendy when you can be timeless? As women, we all have that special little black dress in our closets. My floor prop stash is like that black dress: dependable, classic, timeless, classy, totally gorgeous no matter the occasion, ha! For instance, the baby girl featured above is named Sophia. She visited my studio space when she was 7 days fresh and new. Her mama relayed she liked girly set ups, so I pulled an antique quilt I picked up at a local shop an paired it with an organic wrap, that's soft and peach. This exudes all things girly and precious! After all, little girls are angels and should look feminine and dainty during the session. This type of wooden bowl is also versatile because you put baby on their belly, side, back, and shoot from many different angles.

However, wooden bowls and trenches can also be styled to look more masculine. This bowl, shown above, features Dylan who visited at 11 days new. He is wrapped in a taupe textile and has an adorable bear hat and matching teddy in his hands. The styling is vintage and timeless so that nothing is distracting from his handsome face. Look at his sweet little lips! His precious pout just made me sigh with happiness during our time - capturing details like this makes my day!

Rustic, Organic Wooden Boxes & Crates

Crates and boxes are excellent choices for vintage inspired newborn photography! They can be styled to reflect either gender; they look fantastic with any color option and also can fit pretty much any size baby.

When parents notify me of their little darling being earth side, I do take their weight and size into consideration. After all, baby should fit into the prop but not be swallowed up so that you cannot focus on them.

Newborn Baby Photography Props

Wooden, classic props are also an excellent opportunity to document baby's macro images, too. Macro images, you see, are those up close, darling details of a new baby. These are the characteristics parents spend hours memorizing; you will not want to forget these! Examples of macro images are lips, toes, nails, eyelashes, etc - everything newborn! Since baby is styled perfectly, you can take your time and capture these detailed images. This adds much soul and breathtaking portraiture to your final baby gallery, too! Parents love these!

Sloane, for instance, shown above, has the most lovely little lips and hands. She has cheeks for days, so when she is wrapped so snuggly into this box, I made sure to take advantage of her sleeping so soundly.

As you may have noticed, wooden boxes and crates can be styled in numerous ways. They look amazing with deep, vibrant tones or even soft, muted neutrals and pastels. I like to have fun and be creative here when working with newborn loves; I have many vintage quilts, textured pieces, and adorable knitted hats/bonnets/caps to adorn your sweet baby.

Wooden Bench

This wooden bench is an absolute dream! It cradles baby perfectly and can be either styled with neutrals or color, though I do prefer muted color schemes with this floor prop.

Antique Scale

The antique scale is the perfect vintage prop because it fits any baby or gender! This sweet boy, for example, is over 10 pounds but when he visited I was able to add him into this floor prop piece. I don't use the scale often, but when I do I am reminded how cute it is, ha!

Wire Baskets

Wire baskets are a huge must have for any newborn photographer! Wire baskets are versatile because they come in any shape, size, or color. I happen to have several of these and enjoy using them in my posed newborn portraituer because the styling is always timeless. They make for the perfect bed or snuggly set up.

This gold one, for example, was purchased from Home Goods and is dainty and fresh. Anytime a mom tells me she likes the color gold I remember this basket and pull it from her. It can be used with peaches, pinks, mauves, white, purple or even cream and ivory.

Spring TX Newborn Photography

A circular wire basket is a great vintage prop because it's a nice alternative to a wooden bucket. You can use any color here, too, based on your preferences.

Furthermore, a square or rectangle wire basket is also a lovely option because it's super versatile. The next image you see, shown below, is all things rustic earth tones and neutral.

But then of course, a round circular basket is fantastic because it can hold baby perfectly.

Woven Basket

Finally, a woven basket can be styled for vintage newborn portraiture because it can look lovely with any color, baby, or gender. This little girl, for instance, visited for a full newborn collection at 8 days. Addie is about 7 pounds here, but fits perfectly. I think it's extra sweet when their little fingers hand over the prop, too!

Styling Behind Your Newborn Session | Be Timeless & Vintage

Sarah Borchgrevink Photography is a Houston Newborn Photographer offering timeless and vintage inspired styling for your baby's portraiture session.

Be timeless in a world of trendy

Good afternoon! Thanks for visiting my blog! Today's blog post is full of great information for you! As an expecting mother, you're probably curious about the newborn options available to you. Please allow me to introduce myself: my name is Sarah and I specialize in the stunning art of posed newborn photography. I am fully vaccinated, insured, and trained in newborn photography. I have taken workshops on newborn safety & handling, soothing, posing, flow, and post processing of your images. This in mind, I take your investment very seriously. I delight in working with your sweet baby and look forward to our time together!

When booking your newborn session, it's very important you research why your photographer is a good fit for you. Each photographer has a different way of posing and working with newborns; we have props that are specific to our brand. You select your photographer based on the styling of their images. It's pertinent you select someone who is a good fit for you; someone who uses colors you like, especially. There is no "wrong" or "right" way to style your newborns, I promise! It's a personal choice your photographer makes and is part of their brand as an artist.

This blog post explains how I style my newborn sessions. This will help you see the vision behind my newborn portraiture and if I'm a good fit for you. :-) First up: I welcome you to take a little virtual tour of my newborn studio, located in NW Houston near Barker Cypress & 290. This is where all newborn sessions take place, typically in the first 14 days of life. They also take place 7 days a week between the hours of 9 AM - 4 PM. They're typically 1-2 hours long from start to finish.

Classic, Timeless, Fresh and Pure Newborn Photography

Sometimes parents are curious what it means to use classic or timeless styling. Since they're not newborn photographers themselves, it can feel overwhelming when sifting through the numerous styles you come across. To me, I interpret these terms to be simple, time-honored, and representative of all things beautiful in a newborn. By removing props that date the images, you're able to convey a vintage tone. As women, we all have our little black dress in our closets: this dress is perfect for any occasion and never goes out of style. Vintage is prime because it will forever be stylish. 30 years from now when you view these images, nothing will detract from your precious baby. All you will see is excellent newborn portraiture.

When selecting newborn props for your session, I think of quintessential accessories such as sweet little bonnets which exemplify the chubby cheeks of your baby. Hand created headbands and tie backs adorn your cherub's forehead and will endure the test of time. I remove brands, cartoon characters, sports teams, and hobbies in order to showcase the beauty of newborn. The session should feel endearing, distinguished, and pure - all things adorable about a brand new baby.

By using props that are often an antique, there is an interesting element in the photo but nothing too distracting. Examples of floor props I might use are a metal bucket or pail, wooden box, or a weaved basket.

The importance of texture & color

The texture and color in your newborn sessions creates character, balance, interest and improves the overall composition of the portrait because these elements are the ultimate framework in showcasing how precious a baby is. Simplicity is key - the photos should look effortless through the listed elements. For instance, I used distressed wood floors that are coarse and rustic; paired with the organic wrap and the fine texture of the knitted plush blanket, your baby is super comfy. Interest is developed this way. The soft bonnet and hands gently folded beneath her chin are the final touches needed.

The colors I generally pull inspiration from are soulful, moving, vibrant and rich. Jewel tones are especially some of my favorites because they illuminate the baby's skin in the most gorgeous way! While I will use a soft neutral or organic tone sparingly, the more dynamic the color scheme is, the more I adore the image. Parents who are seeking vibrance are a wonderful fit for me from an aesetic perspective.

Simple and Fresh Posing

Newborn posing can be tricky because baby must be very sleepy and new. Part of the reason newborn sessions take place in the first 14 days of life is because this is when babies are most mold-able. They've recently left the womb, and while in there, baby was in all sorts of cute positions, thus making little one super flexible. After all, there's only so much space there and so they're curled up with their feet near their faces, for instance. I choose to pose my newborn sessions as simply as possible; I do this by ensuring baby is the star of the image. I will use a cute tieback or head band (shown below) to suggest the gender of baby, but I remove as many elements as possible so baby is the focal point. The more props you remove, the better your posing has to be because there's nothing to distract the viewer. Instead, the hands need to be gently placed on their face or folded beneath their chin. Their little bodies look lovely when curled up and we can see all the squishy aspects of your brand new little love!

Cozy & Unique Wrapping

Creative, cozy and adorable wrapping is a cornerstone to all of my newborn sessions. I cannot express how precious this wrapping is and how comfortable and happy it keeps your baby. This wrapping is a favorite of mine and I always do a majority of the session in many different styles. Parents are often in awe when they see how well their babies sleep and we're able to move through the session very quickly and efficiently. Babies love to be wrapped because it reminds them of being in the womb; it keeps them cozy and comfy! Remember: baby spent 9 months in a tight environment at 98.6 degrees, so my newborn sessions emulate this for the comfort of baby.

Here's what this mother had to say about her newborn portraiture experience with Sarah:

The newborn session was great. You could tell that Sarah was very experienced with newborns. I LOVED the rich jewel tones colors that Sarah chose for the session. I'm ecstatic with the results and look forward to having these captured moments displayed in my home.
