Located in Northwest Houston, Sarah Borchgrevink offers stunning & dynamic on location pregnancy portraits for expecting couples and mothers to be.
Howdy, friends! Welcome to my blog! Today's blog post is a great overview sharing some nifty details about booking your maternity session. I'm thrilled you're here so let's get started!
Dynamic, Fresh & Natural Light Maternity Portraiture by Sarah Borchgrevink
The session I'm previewing today is for a client who chose both natural, light maternity & a custom, in studio newborn session with me. As a portrait photographer, I am based in Northwest Houston, about 20 minutes outside the 610 loop. This couple, however, lives close to me - just a few neighborhoods over so it was fun to work with someone from the immediate area! When booking a session, you're sent a new client welcome PDF. You'll find all sorts of interesting information in this packet such as hair and make up recommendations, a list of locations for you to select from, a frequently asked question list, a link to your contract, plus outfit inspiration + a list of preferred vendors.
Before we dive into the maternity portion, here's a look at the full newborn collection blog post. If you're on the fence about a studio session, feel free to take a look to read more about the session.
When Do Maternity Sessions Take Place?
This beautiful mother to be came to me to book in her second trimester. She stopped by my studio when she was around 25 weeks pregnant; we scheduled her maternity session for the beginning of her third trimester. My preference is anywhere from 30-34 weeks along, however, I've also done maternity sessions at about 27 weeks, too! Each mother is different; each belly grows at its own pace, ha!
This couple was super sweet to photograph! When they came for their in person consultation, I really enjoyed hearing about their daily life. It's important to me we connect and ensure we're a good fit for one another. Your pregnancy portraits are very special and the person you choose to document them should be invested in the final outcome. I adore with mothers to be; this is because I have three of my own kiddos, although we're having another kiddo in December, so I can attest to how important this time is. You're preparing to meet your little one, you cannot wait to hold them; a dynamic and gorgeous sunset session is a fantastic way to celebrate this beautiful time in your life.
What Time Do Natural Light Sessions Take Place?
All of my sessions begin at either sunrise or sunset. This is when the light is most soft, flattering and exudes a perfect warmth over the subject. While the session times do vary, depending on the time of the year, you can expect to begin 45 minutes before the light is completely gone or you about 1/2 hour after the sun comes up. Either option is a great choice! Both sunrise and sunset light are different, however, there is something super special to both; this is my preferred time to shoot and I do not offer mid-day sessions unless we shoot in studio.
Genuine & Honest Moments Between Exepecting Couples
When working with expecting mothers, I always include your spouse or partner. If you have other children they're welcome, too! They are part of your story and I am honored to document this time for you. I delight in photographing little ones and capturing the special bond of mother and her children, or the way a husband looks at his beautiful, radiant wife.
In general, my session tone is lifestyle in nature. This means, I focus on casual interactions. I do give direction to ensure the photos are framed correctly, but I like to also let the connection develop organically. I might say, "Dad - hold her hands. Look into her eyes. Think about your wedding day," or "Mom, tell Dad your favorite thing about him." This session is a reflection of who you are: it's what you've built. It's a life you've created. It's pure and fresh and honest; it deserves the utmost respect. For each client who chooses me to photograph their maternity session, I am humbled and blessed. Congratulations on your baby!
What Happens After the Session?
After your session, you may expect your final images to be retouched in 10 business days. Each photographer does things a little differently: I am all about simplicity and making the process streamlined for you. For instance, all of my sessions are one flat rate and digital based. While I do offer many stunning professional prints & products, I also recognize we're a modern, technically saavy era. Parents like digital files. They like to also have a print release to choose their own lab. This in mind, 10 business days after our time together, you will receive a password protected, online private gallery. It is yours to share, download, etc. You can also send the gallery to family or friends who may be interested in seeing your photos, too. Then I archive the session for safe keeping.
If you'd like a sneak preview, have no fear. Your contract covers if you would like one or not. If you do prefer a sneak preview, you'll see one 3-4 days after your session. If you choose to be surprised, please know I am working on them behind the scenes, ha! :-)
Here's the rest of my favorite images from their session. I hope you enjoy viewing!
